Something From Almost Nothing - Cardstock

Prompt Four in Shimelle's Something From Almost Nothing class focused on solid colored cardstock. I created two layouts with inspiration from this prompt, trying something new to me in both instances.

This first layout uses three pieces of the same colored cardstock and creates a dramatic look for these two photos taken of all the lounge chairs on deck during our 10th anniversary cruise. This is the first time I've ever just used one color of cardstock without any other colors or patterned papers. I really like the way this turned out and will definitely be using this technique again.

The second new technique I tried involved weaving strips of paper together to form a background. I used cardstock as well as patterned paper pieces for my weaving and have to admit that it was more difficult than I had anticipated. I didn't do a very good job of keeping it all straight, but I think it makes a nice layer on this layout.

I'm having a great time working my way through the class materials and trying new techniques along the way. What new techniques have you tried lately?

  1. Love the first LO...that blue is perfect for the photos....and gives such a great feel of the sea's vastness.

  2. Really like the monochromatic feel to the first page - shows how stunning plain cardstock can be. Paper weaving is tricky isn't it? I've got some templates around here to make pretty patterns but like just a plain block too.

  4. Funny, I used a plain cardstock as a background recently (tho I did add in patterns too) ..you were inspiring me from afar! And I liked how it turned out, just as I like what you have here too. It's economical too..

  5. I didn't think I would like a layout with plain cardstock, but your first one is a knock out. Nice work.

  6. Absolutely LOVE the first layout! I'm convinced a great layout doesn't need more than a good photograph(s), some cardstock, and a story. Your layout is proof!

  8. Your photos really pop against that darker background and the twine is a perfect addition. Admiring your weaving; I love weaving but haven't done any for years ... Yours forms a great mat behind your photo.

  9. Catching up on my blogs today. I love the little technique you did with the baker's twine. It looks like you ran it behind the photo at the top and popped it through the picture. Clever.
