Playful Photography - Frugal Still Life Photography

Last week was the second week of Cheryl's Frugal Still Photography class, and she discussed cropping and space in photos. Since I was leaving for the Play! in Anaheim event, I only had time to read through Cheryl's materials before heading out. I had Cheryl's ideas in mind when I shot these two photos during one of the early sessions at Play!

I didn't really get a pull back shot for these, but here's a look at my space at the table. The white plastic tablecloth and the green bag provided the backdrops for my photos.

One of the sessions at the Play! event was lead by Tracey Clark (founder of Shutters Sisters) and was all about playful photography. We were given instructions to visit several stations throughout the hotel that had been set up as a scavenger hunt for fun photos. Today I'm sharing photos from that session that I think fit in with Cheryl's still life class.

I set up the shots of the glasses and the crown, but the two outdoor shots were of items that were there for us to use and play with in our photos - I simply shot them as still life. Please let me know in the comments what you think of these still life photos. Do you have a favorite?

[BTW - did you notice that one of them is also a selfie?]

  7. Wow Melissa, it sure looks like you had FUN! It's hard to choose a fav. I love your 1st brightly colored image and that cute little stuffed animal (love your pullback shot too, nice!). But I think my fav is the glasses with all those wonderful reflections! Thanks for playing along, great job!

  8. I'm going to break from the crowd and say my favorite is the drinks. I love the way the light prisms reflect on the counter surface. Gorgeous shots!

  11. Yep, me too. Love the sunglasses photo. Anytime I catch my reflection or a loved ones reflection like that it's a winner! I enjoy still life photography. Being single and from a family who shys away from the camera, my photos of inanimate objects are generally better than the ones with humans! LOL. :)
