Get To Know Jesus - Book Review

I'm sneaking in an extra post today to review the book I completed yesterday. I received a copy of Jesus (Get to Know) free from Booklook Bloggers in exchange for an honest review.

This book is part of a new kids series of biographies of Biblical heroes. The book is well written, with lots of colorful photos and maps and insert boxes with new vocabulary words and interesting facts. It is a nice overview of the life of Christ, from His birth to His ascension into heaven.

However, I was disappointed in the way the book continually stated things like "many scholars take these events very seriously" or "many scholars view the Gospels as historical documents that tell us what really happened when Jesus was born." As a Christian, I believe the Bible is the true Word and God and think that these statements undermine the act of faith that is so essential to becoming a Christian. While I appreciate the archeological and scholarly evidence that the Bible is accurate, I was personally saddened that the author felt she needed to continually assure children that these things were true rather than stating them as the Truth.

  1. Melissa, I think you would really like Bill O'Reilly's Killing Jesus. It gives a great background to the times and follows Jesus' life very accurately. I don't think we can appreciate the political times in which HE lived. Probably very much like the current situation in the Middle East.
