Grandy & Pawpa's Trip Out West 1970

Welcome to the first Sunday of a new month, the day Sian encourages us to tell our stories with words and/or photos as part of Storytelling Sunday. For my story, I'll be sharing photos of a mini-album that I completed, along with the journaling (my own as well as Robbie's!).

I started this mini-album in a class at our local scrapbook store, then it sat half finished for almost two years. When we found these photos and postcards from Grandy and Pawpa's trip out west in 1970, I knew it was time to finish this album and showcase their trip as a tribute to their enjoyment traveling together - one of the many things Robbie and I enjoy, too. I'm excited to complete this album!

Unfortunately, we don't have a travel log for this trip and most of the photos do not have notes, so here they are in random order - enjoy!

[Robbie's handwritten journaling] I remember Grandy telling me about the time they went to this restaurant outside Mesa, AZ. The owners of the place insisted on cutting off the ties of every man that ate at the restaurant. Pawpa didn't know about this beforehand and he was surprised when they "chopped his tie in half." After they cut off the ties, they were hung in the ceiling for all to see (with a tag giving the date, name, and home city of each person whose tie was cut off.) In the late 1990's (I think 1997) I found myself in Scottsdale, AZ for a business conference. Since I had never been there before, I made a point to drive up the mountain to see if the restaurant still existed. Well, it did and I spent well over an hour looking for Pawpa's tie, and I could not find it - there were 1,000s of ties hanging from the ceiling!

[Robbie's handwritten journaling] Grandy and Pawpa made several trips out west when I was young. To this day, I always wished I had been able to travel with them to AZ. Grandy had decided to take me on their next trip out west (after 1970) but Pawpa's health had declined to the point that they felt they couldn't make the trip. Even so, over the years I have been fortunate enough to have been able to visit many of the same places - even some they never made it to. Still, there are even more places to visit and I look forward to exploring them with Melissa some day.
