Colored Pencils - Frugal Still Life Photography

I'm excited to be taking part in Cheryl's Frugal Still Photography class over the next eight weeks. We received a pdf handout with tips and ideas for taking still life photos before class began, and this week Cheryl shared an inspiration photo with coins spilling out of a jar (and another one with marbles) with a black velvet background.

I'm not much of a photographer, but I thought this class would help me practice setting up some shots and (hopefully) encourage me to learn more about my camera. At this point, I'm still on auto mode, but I decided to try a still life with my cup of colored pencils and a white background. Here's what I came up with.

I have to admit that the lighting wasn't great as it was a very gray rainy day here. I don't have a soft light or any kind of special set up, so I did tweak these photos a little in Photoshop Elements. Here's a look at my set up for this shot.

I have to admit that it was FUN setting up this still life and capturing these photos, especially because this Micky Mouse cup reminds me that I'm going to Disneyland next week! [big grin] I'm looking forward to seeing what other inspiration Cheryl has for us as the class progresses! This isFUN !

I'd love to know which of these three photos you think is the best! Please tell me in the comments.

  1. I love the composition of the second shot. I like how you can see Mickey on the cup and how you cropped the photo to be more close-up.
I'm really enjoying seeing what everyone is doing in this class.

  2. These photos could be part of the Zoom in Zoom out series. I really like the fourth photo where you show your set-up. All of the colors really "pop."

  3. Like Rinda, I like the second shot. In addition to her comments, I like that the back of the white board is angled in that shot.

  6. Another vote for photo 2! I also have some white board that I use a lot when I'm shooting photos of layouts and projects. Great backdrop.

  8. Here's another vote for #2, the way you got closer to your objects. Such a colorful shot and I love it!
The only suggestion I would have is when looking through the view finder ....if you see the back piece of cardboard is darker, pull the pencils out a little further onto where it's all white to avoid the darker color in the back piece. Did that make sense? You did a wonderful job on week #1!!
