Blog Every Day In May - Top Five Movie Series

It's difficult for me to choose my favorite movie or even my top five because many of my favorites are actually film series. My favorite series are typically based on books that I've enjoyed.

For example, I especially like the Harry Potter movies . . . all eight of them! (See I'm over five already!) I enjoyed all the Harry Potter books, and the movies just made these stories come to life on the big screen. One of the reasons I like them so much is the consistency in actors playing the roles. Other than the Dumbledore change, which couldn't be avoided due to the death of Richard Harris, all the major and many of the minor roles were played by the same actors. (I shared more of my thoughts and our adventures with the Harry Potter books and movies in this post a few years ago.)

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is another favorite book and movie series. I've read the books several times, and we enjoy a Lord of the Rings "movie marathon" every other year or so. Again, I think having consistent actors throughout the movies helped maintain the continuity of the story. Of course, these three movies were all shot together over an 18-month period, then the special effects were added and the movies released over three years.

The eleven Marvel movies released over the past several years, beginning with Iron Man in 2008 right up to Avengers: Age of Ultron, which released this past weekend, are huge favorites! I just can't say enough about what a great job Marvel does bringing comic book characters to the big screen. I enjoy the storylines, the interwoven comedy, and, of course, Stan Lee's cameos.

The Divergent series is not yet complete, but I've enjoyed the first two movies (and the books they are based on) and am looking forward to completing the series next spring.
I read and enjoyed all three books of The Hunger Games Trilogy before the first movie was released. However, I have to admit that after watching the first movie in the series, I had a weird feeling, like we had just watched something similar to the actual Hunger Games in the book/movie. The books and movies really made me think about whether as a society we could end up with something similar to the hunger games happening. (We know it's happened before with gladiatorial games, right!) I do like books and movies that make me think, and we're definitely looking forward to the fourth and final movie in this series being released later this year.

If you've been keeping count, that makes 27 (already released) movies in my top five favorite film series! We own all of these movies on DVD/Blu-ray, so we've watched them all more than once. Do you have a favorite film series that you've watched multiple times?

  1. I don't watch much TV, and we go to the movies maybe 5-6 times a year, so coming up with a series of movies would be next to impossible. I loved the first few Harry Potters, but gave up on them when they got so dark.

  2. So I'm with you on Harry Potter, Hunger Games, and Divergent series. I read Lord of the Rings back in high school but haven't seen the movies. And although I watch some of the comic book movies with Jay, they aren't really my thing. You definitely have specific genres that hit your top 5 list!

  8. Well scrappyjacky isn't the only one that's never seen a Harry Potter movie. I haven't either. I've heard over and over how good they are so maybe it's time I watched one.
I saw one of the Hunger Games movies and really like it, so maybe catching up on that would be something to watch as well.
I can only think of two movie series that I've watched....over and over....the first being Twighlight and the second being the Love Comes Softy Series.
I want to thank you too Melissa for visiting my blog and I'm glad I've seen Cate's link up too. I'm going to try it!
